Kinderdijk World Heritage Site

Kinderdijk is an Unesco World Heritage site near our hotel. It is an impressive and beautiful area where, in the past, windmills were used in the battle against high water levels. The 19 authentic windmills, originating from the 18th century, remain as the silent witness to that struggle.

19 polder mills

Kinderdijk is mainly famous for its Kinderdijk windmills. There are 19 polder, or ‘draining’ mills that were used to pump the polders dry and to keep them drained. Its instrumental role in the renowned Dutch battle against water has made Kinderdijk an important tourist attraction. The area has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997. You can also visit the inside of one of the windmills.
